Music Man will be at TCHS on Thursday night with Step-up (Intermediate and Professional) instruments and mouthpieces for students to try and purchase. This is a great opportunity for our student musicians to look at upgrading their instruments and/or mouthpieces to one that matches their current level of musicianship.
Beethoven and Company will be at TCHS on Thursday night (in the auditorium) with Solo and Ensemble sheet music. Students may look at, study, try, and purchase solos and ensembles for the Prism Concert and for the Florida Bandmasters' Association Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment. They are bringing solos and ensembles for Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion players as well as for Vocalists.
Music Man is offering three free masterclasses at TCHS on Thursday night as well. There is one on Trumpet technique, one on Woodwind Technique, and one on Low Brass Technique. The trumpet masterclass is being run by Grammy nominated musician John Lovell. The woodwind masterclass is being run by Paul Magersuppe and the low brass masterclass is being run by Manny Camacho.
Here are some of the bios of the folks coming in for our students to have access to Friday night:
Paul Magersuppe earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Florida State University. Since returning to South Florida in 1982, Mr. Magersuppe has enjoyed a musically diverse career, performing professionally on the saxophones, clarinet and flute. Some of the performers he has worked with include Robert Goulet, Al Martino, Carol Channing, Eddie Fisher, Perry Como, George Burns, Rich Little, Aretha Franklin, Dick Johnson, Dudley Moore, Eartha Kitt, Duffy Jackson, The Temptations, the Four Tops, the Platters, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, the Marshall Grant Orchestra, the Palm Beach County Chamber Ensemble, the Israeli Chamber Orchestra, and the Palm Beach County Woodwind Quintet. A member of the former International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE), the Music Educator’s National Conference (MENC), and the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA), Paul has been a band director at Palm Springs Middle School for the past 22 years. In addition, he has served as instructor of saxophone at Palm Beach Community College and has performed with the PBCC Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble. He is now the woodwind instructor at several high schools in Palm Beach County and assists at Palm Beach State College. In addition, he has a roster of private students ranging in level from beginning to advanced.
John Lovell started playing trumpet at age 5 because his dad was a trumpet player. He joined his school band, went to college, dropped out, and then got his first major musician job with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra. He later did a stint with the O’Jays and ended up touring with them. He eventually moved to Miami and attended the University of Miami School of Music where he played in the concert jazz band. He started working in a club called Bananas, where he had the opportunity to play with artists such as Tony Bennett, Dianne Carroll, Bob Hope, and Ben E. King.
John won the Downbeat Magazine student-recording award for Outstanding Performance by a Jazz Instrumentalist in 1982. He spent time during the “fabulous 80s” at jazz radio WDNA in Miami; however, in 1987 he was a “starving musician” paying bills as a substitute teacher in the Dade County public schools.
In 1992, John was selling stereos, working at a local Circuit City store and “wasn’t getting anywhere.” Then he got a call from a friend who was in the studio with Jimmy Buffett, where they were looking for a trumpet player. He sent a tape, resume and picture and two weeks later he got the job.
John has always been a jazz player and, when he’s not touring with Jimmy Buffett, he can be found playing with a local swing band in the Palm Beach area.
